Privacy Policy

PyroRisk (pyrorisk.net) is a personal fire science website run by Duy Cuong DINH, who is the data controller for this site. This page explains, in plain language, what data is processed when you visit, who processes it, and what choices you have. Questions go to contact@pyrorisk.net.

The short version

  • There are no accounts and no first-party analytics or tracking.
  • The site may show ads, from advertising networks (currently only Google AdSense) or booked directly by advertisers. Advertising networks use cookies to serve and measure ads. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland they need your consent first, which you give or refuse in a consent message.
  • Comments, the newsletter and the contact form use third-party services, and only when you choose to use them.

Advertising

PyroRisk is free to read. To cover its costs, the site may show display ads. Ads may come from two kinds of source: advertising networks, each named below, and advertisers who book space directly. Ads never influence what is written (see the editorial policy).

Every advertising network that may serve ads here is listed in this section with its privacy policy and opt-out links. A new network will be added to the list, and the date above revised, before it serves any ads.

Google AdSense

Google AdSense is currently the only advertising network that may serve ads on this site. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.

Google and the ad technology vendors it works with may also use cookies and similar technologies to measure ad performance, limit how often you see the same ad, and detect fraud. Google explains how it uses this data in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

You can opt out of personalized advertising at any time:

If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will not be based on your browsing history.

Ads booked directly

Advertisers can also book ad space directly with PyroRisk. These ads are placed by the site itself and are clearly labeled as advertising. Clicking one takes you to the advertiser's website, where its own privacy policy applies. If a directly booked ad ever uses cookies or tracking, or shares any data with the advertiser, this policy will be updated before the ad runs.

Cookies and your consent

When network ads are shown, visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland see a consent message before any advertising cookies are set. It lists the ad vendors involved and lets you accept or refuse each purpose, such as personalized ads or ad measurement. For Google AdSense, this message is Google's own certified consent tool, which follows the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework. Advertising cookies are stored on your device only if you allow it. If you refuse, you may still see ads that are not personalized.

Whenever network ads are shown, a "Privacy and cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page lets you change or withdraw your choice at any time. You can also clear this site's cookies in your browser.

This site sets no cookies of its own. The only advertising cookies are those of the networks above; in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland they are set only with your consent. Your theme preference (light or dark) is stored in your browser's local storage and never leaves your device.

Comments (Giscus / GitHub)

Comments are powered by Giscus, which stores comments as GitHub Discussions. To comment, you sign in with your GitHub account; your comment and GitHub profile name are public. This is governed by GitHub's privacy statement. Reading comments does not require an account.

Newsletter (Buttondown)

If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address is stored by Buttondown and used only to send you the newsletter. Every email includes an unsubscribe link; unsubscribing removes your address.

Contact form (Web3Forms)

Messages sent through the contact form are relayed by Web3Forms to my email inbox. The name, email address, and message you provide are used only to reply to you, and kept only as long as the conversation needs.

Hosting and fonts

The site is served by Cloudflare, which may process your IP address in server logs for security and delivery purposes (see the Cloudflare privacy policy). Fonts are served from pyrorisk.net itself, so loading a page sends no request to a font provider.

Legal bases

For visitors covered by the GDPR, each use of data rests on one of these grounds:

  • Consent for advertising cookies (as required by the ePrivacy rules and, in France, article 82 of the Loi Informatique et Libertés) and for the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time.
  • Legitimate interest for keeping the site secure and available (hosting logs) and replying to messages you send.

Transfers outside the EU

Several of the services named here are based outside the European Union, mainly in the United States, so data may be transferred there. Each provider's privacy policy, linked above, explains the safeguards it uses for those transfers.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or delete personal data about you, to object to or restrict its use, and to withdraw consent. For anything this site controls, such as newsletter subscriptions or contact form messages, email contact@pyrorisk.net and I will handle it. For data held by the advertising networks listed above, GitHub, Buttondown, Web3Forms or Cloudflare, their privacy policies linked above explain how to exercise your rights with them.

If you think your data has been handled unlawfully, you can complain to the French data protection authority, the CNIL, or to the authority in your own country.

Changes to this policy

If the site starts using a new service that processes personal data, this page will be updated and the date above revised. See also the legal notice and the disclaimer and terms of use.
