ALARP weighing at a grid-scale battery storage site at golden hour — rows of white lithium-ion battery containers behind a chain-link fence with a brick house beyond, an antique brass balance scale on a weathered steel site table with a stack of coins on one pan and a small steel model of a battery container on the other, an open safety case binder showing a red, amber and green inverted tolerability triangle, and a fire safety engineer in a hi-vis vest and white hard hat resting a hand on the binder while studying the scale

ALARP: How 'As Low As Reasonably Practicable' Became Law

ALARP turns a 1949 mining case into a legal test. Here come the tolerability limits, the gross disproportion arithmetic, and how a BESS case uses them.

Off-gas detection during a battery abuse test in a dim laboratory — a large prismatic lithium-ion cell stands on a scorched steel test frame with its safety vent just split open, a thin curl of pale white solvent vapour rises into a stainless steel collection hood with no flame anywhere, a small cylindrical gas sensor probe with a glowing amber LED hangs a few centimetres above the vent on a black cable, an instrumentation rack behind shows a rising green gas trace and a red GAS ALARM banner, thermocouple wires tape across the cell face, and a technician in navy coveralls and safety glasses watches from behind a scratched blast shield

Off-Gas Detection: The Warning Before a Battery Fire

Off-gas detection reads the vapour a failing cell breathes out before flame. Here comes the window it buys, the sensors that see it, and the limits.

Firefighters cooling a lithium battery fire at dusk on a wet training pad — a silver electric hatchback stands jacked on timber cribbing with its underfloor pack glowing orange and venting a sideways jet of flame, two firefighters in tan bunker gear and SCBA kneel behind a hoseline and drive a heavy water stream under the car, dense white steam rolls across the flooded concrete under portable floodlights, a third firefighter holds a thermal-imaging camera showing a bright hot spot, and a spent CO2 extinguisher lies discarded in the foreground puddle

How to Put Out a Lithium Battery Fire Without Smothering

A lithium battery fire shrugs off CO₂, halon and dry powder. Here comes the heat budget that explains why water, and only water, ends the event.

Battery module propagation test in a dark laboratory — eight large prismatic lithium-ion cells stand clamped on a scorched steel table with thin white barrier sheets between them, the third cell vents a long jet of white-hot gas and sparks sideways while its neighbour glows dull red, grey vent gas rolls across the back wall, dozens of thermocouple wires run from the cells to an instrumentation rack showing live temperature traces, and two technicians in orange fire-resistant coveralls and hard hats watch from behind a scratched blast shield

Thermal Runaway Propagation: How One Cell Takes a Pack

Thermal runaway propagation turns one failed cell into a lost pack. Here comes the heat budget that decides it, and the design that stops it.
